Hey there! What's up,

Well... Well... Well...
It has been very pleasure to hear that you are going to start your own blog or you may have already started. You have started your own blog means we will now get a new thought & ideas (I mean content) to read. We may get a new things to learn from your blog.

Assuming that you have a very quite interesting contents to share with your audience which can make you popular later on. But in the beginning of your blogging journey, you might be unaware of various things related to blogging like SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), Platforms available for blogging (such as Blogger, WordPress, Wix, Joomla, etc...), Custom domains, Themes & Plugins and other settings that you need to do at first.

As I have stated above that there are various platforms available for blogging, you may have selected one of them by the best of the your knowledge and suitability. But here in this post we are going to talk about Blogger, which is the free blogging platform provided by Google.

Blogger is very popular among its users because it's a free and very simple to use unlike WordPress, which is also very popular but a costly one.

Starting a blog on blogger is not a difficult process. You just have to search for blogger on google and click on sign-up. For signing-up on blogger you need a Gmail account, which all us have now a days, so no worry regarding that.

Now, let's see the couple of things that you should do after signing-up.

Once you signed-up on blogger, you will see the layout or say blogger interference. Now for starting your blog you have to click on create new blog. Once you click on create new blog, it will ask you to enter a name for your blog and also for a blog address. Initially your blog address contains extension at the end of your blog address. You can start your blog with this extension or if you want to remove that from your address, then you need a custom domain and you have to connect it with your blogger.

If you don't know how to connect custom domain with your blogger blog, then check out my guide on how to connect custom domain with your blogger blog.

Also if you are having trouble in choosing a domain name for your blog, then check out my another post related to Things that you should keep in your mind while selecting a domain name for your blog.

Once you create new blog, you will see blogger layout with different option where you can create, edit and publish your post. Also there will be option for customizing the look of your blog.

So, here we will see some settings that you should do before you start publishing your post.

Change a Theme of your blog

When we talk about customization of our blog, Themes play a very important role. Blogger provides you couple of free themes which you can use. Those themes are simple in look. But if you want something cool looking and with extra features, I would suggest you to use 3rd party themes on your blog.

Now question arise that from where to get such 3rd party themes?

There are lots of website on the internet from where you can download 3rd party themes. Those themes are available in free version as well as in paid version. To download 3rd party themes, just search for blogger templates or blogger themes on google.

Once you find the theme you like, upload it on your blog. For uploading the theme on blogger, go to Theme and click on Backup/Restore and then click on upload theme. By changing the theme, your blog will now look more customized & attractive.

Add description to your blog

When you see any website on the search result, you will see some information below that website name, that is called the description.

In order to aware your audience about your blog content, you have to add a description to your blog which represents the type of content that you are going to share. I mean just give a information like what this blog is about and what kind of article and things you are posting on your blog.

To add description on your blogger blog, go to Setting > Basic. There you can add description of your blog.

Also, you can add Meta-description to your blog. For that, go to Settings > Search preferences.

Connect/Add your blog to Google’s webmaster or Search Console

Search console is the tool provided by the Google where you can see various statics of your blog such as performance of your blog, coverage information of your blog, etc.

In order to see those statics you need to add your blog in search console and you have to verify that you are the owner of that blog. To add your blog in search console just go to Settings > Search preferences. There you will see Google search console option under Crawlers and indexing. Click on edit button on the right side of google search console. This will automatically redirect you to search console website and your blog will be automatically verified.

Search console will help you a lot to track your website/blog performance.

Enable custom robot.txt

Robot.txt is the simple text file but a very powerful thing. According to your robot.txt file, search engine bots rank and crawl different URLs. With the help of this robot.txt file, you can control which type of pages to be ranked by crawler and which type of pages or directories to be blocked. It's not necessary to add custom robot.txt file. By default on blogger, there is already robot.txt file available for your blog which looks like below,

User-agent: Mediapartners-Google

User-agent: *
Disallow: /search
Allow: /

If you want to see your robot.txt file then, enter below address in URL bar.
For example,

Enable custom robot header tags

To enable custom robot header tags, go to Settings > Search Preferences. Click on edit and tick-mark the options as below image.

That's it.

So, this are the some of important things that you should do if are new to blogger and if you don't know what to do next. There are lot more things that you can do with your blog but this are the some basic settings that I personally do when I start any new blog on blogger.

That's all for now.

I hope you have fun reading this post.

Good bye 👋🏻, see you soon.
