Different Ways To Take A Screenshots On Windows 10 PC


If you want to take a screenshot of something on your windows 10 screen, then there are several ways to do it. 

You can take a screenshot of whole desktop screen or a part of it by using different methods and shortcuts.

In this post, I am going to give you couple of shortcut by which you can take a screenshot in a blink of an eye.

Some shortcut copies screenshot to your keyboard and while some shortcut directly saves screenshot in form of image. So, let's see these several ways of taking screenshots on windows 10 PC.

Different ways to take a screenshot on windows PC

>> Press "PrtScrn" key

>> Press " Alt + PrtScrn" key

>> Press "Windows Key + Shift + S" key

>> Press "Windows Key + PrtScrn" key

>> Take a screenshot by using in-built "Snipping Tool".

>> Use "Game Bar" menu to take screenshots & to record screen of your game.

Now, let's see all this shortcut in details.

#1. Press PrtScrn

When you press this PrtScrn button on your keyboard, it copies the entire windows screen and saves it to the keyboard.

You can later paste that screenshot in other program which displays image, such as paint, microsoft word, etc...

Cons: If you need a screenshot in form of image, then you need to paste the copied screen in program like paint and then you have to save it as a image file.

#2. Press Alt + PrtScrn

This shortcut is similar to the above one but in this case it only copies active window (not entire screen) to the keyboard.

So, this shortcut will help you when you just want screenshot of single windows. So, you don't need to crop that screenshot later on.

Cons: Same as above.

#3. Press Windows Key + Shift + S

When you press this key combo, it will dim your screen and your mouse cursor will change. Now you can drag your mouse to select the area you want to take a screenshot of.

This selected area will get copied in to the keyboard and later you can paste it in other program same as above.

#4. Press Windows Key + PrtScrn

This is very useful shortcut when you want to take a screenshot of entire screen. When you press this key combo, it will instantly take a screenshot of your screen and directly saves it in form of image.

You can find that screenshot image in a subfolder called "Screenshot" inside the "Pictures" folder.

#5. Use in-built Snipping tool

This is also another handful method to take a screenshot of your windows screen.

Microsoft included this in-built utility in their windows 10 operating system, which is called as "Snipping tool".

By using this snipping tool, you can directly save screenshot as image file without pasting it in other program like above shortcuts.

How to use Snipping tool to take a screenshot

Step 1. First of all search for snipping tool in windows search bar and open that program from the search results.

Step 2. Now, you will see snipping tool bar with couple of options such as mode, delay, etc.

In the 'Mode' drop-down menu, you can select the type of screenshot that you want to take. You will get four options such as Free-form snip, Rectangular snipe, Windows snip & Full-screen snip

In "Delay" drop-down menu, you can set delay time to capture the screenshots.


Step 3. If you want to take a screenshot of only selected area, then click on "New". After clicking on "New", you will be able to select the select the area (area that you want to take screenshot of) by using your mouse. 

Step 4. All captured screenshot will open in snipping tool menu and from there you can save it as image file.

To save the screenshots as image file, go to "File" menu and click on "Save as" option. Now select the directry where you want to save that image file.

 That's it.

#6. Use Game Bar to take screenshots within game

If you are playing any game and wants to take a screenshots from your game or if you want to record your screen while playing game, you can use in-built "Game Bar" features to do so.

How to take screenshots using Game Bar

Step 1. Start any game on your PC.

Step 2. Now, while playing game, press "Windows Key + G" on your keyboard. Now game bar overlay will appear on your screen.


Step 3. In game bar overlay, you will see camera icon to take a screenshot. Click on that camera icon or press "Windows Key + Alt + PrtScrn" together to take screenshots.

The screenshots will get saved inside "video" folder on your computer.

How to record screen using Game Bar

Step 1. To record screen while playing game, press "Windows + G" on your keyboard to open game bar overlay.

Step 2. Now, you will see a red dot in that game bar overlay to record your screen. Click on that red dot button or press "Windows Key + Alt + R" together to start recording your game.
